Re: Dreamhost
I don't know. You need a dedicated IP, and they do offer it as extra. Ask them if they can offer following:
- dedicated IP, so any domain that points to that IP would automatically point to same website and http://1.2.3.4/ (where 1.2.3.4 is dedicated IP number) would work.
If you register domain with them, then also ask if it is possible to setup wildcard dns for subdomains, so all subdomains would point to your IP, like "*.mydomain.com A 1.2.3.4"
Though I suggest not to use them and get a simple VPS instead. With them you'll be hosted on a shared server with lots of other websites, and forum host uses quite a lot of resources which would eventually cause problems. Check out http://servint.com or any other VPS provider.

Re: Dreamhost
this will not because DreamHost does not offer WildCard DNS. IX Webhosting works with this script, but until DreamHost adds wildcard, no dice...

Dreamhost does offer wildcard DNS you just have to ask, I used to work there. But like cyberalien said I wouldnt try to host phpbbhs on there servers for resource usuage reasons.
