Can I still have my website in the root directory, and put phpbbhs in a subdirectory like www(dot)domain.com/free_signup
I currently use Echophp and theirs will not do this. I am looking for more flexibility.
Can I do this?

Yes, you can put script in subdirectory, but all hosted forums will also use that subdirectory. For example, if you have website on http://www.domain.com and put script in /forum, all hosted forums will be like http://username.domain.com/forum/
Another solution is to use custom domains and different IP for website, which also can be done with this script. Install it on domain.com, then change IP for domain.com and http://www.domain.com to something else where website will be hosted, but keep *.domain.com at forum host IP. Then create a subdomain like signup.domain.com, add it in phpbbhs control panel as another domain and use it for signups.
